OCD Therapy in Towson, Maryland

Thoughts you never asked for, arriving on repeat. Rituals that quiet them for a moment, then demand more. OCD is exhausting in a way few people understand, and it is far more treatable than it feels from the inside.

When your mind demands certainty

OCD runs on a loop. An intrusive thought arrives, unwanted and often disturbing: what if I left the stove on, what if I hurt someone, what if these hands are contaminated, what if I do not really love my partner. Anxiety spikes. A compulsion follows to bring relief: checking, washing, counting, mentally reviewing, seeking reassurance. The relief is real, and it is brief, and it teaches your brain to run the loop again, tighter each time.

Not all compulsions are visible. Many people spend hours in purely mental rituals: replaying conversations, neutralizing bad thoughts with good ones, silently praying or counting. And because intrusive thoughts often strike at the things you care about most, OCD tends to travel with a heavy, hidden shame. Here is the truth worth holding onto: intrusive thoughts are not intentions, and having them says nothing about who you are.

How OCD therapy helps

In our sessions at my Towson office, we will work together to:

  • Map your particular loop: the thoughts, the fears underneath, and the rituals that feed them
  • Learn to relate differently to intrusive thoughts, so they lose their authority
  • Gradually loosen the grip of compulsions, in planned steps you agree to
  • Step out of reassurance-seeking cycles that quietly keep OCD in charge
  • Build tolerance for uncertainty, because that is where lasting freedom from OCD lives

If OCD has been running your days, you already have more endurance than most people will ever need. Therapy points that same strength at the loop itself.

What working with me is like

I am Matthew Richardson, and my practice is built on one idea: no two people experience OCD the same way, so no two treatment plans should look alike. Sessions are unhurried and confidential, in a comfortable office on Allegheny Avenue in the heart of Towson, a short drive from anywhere in Baltimore County. Prefer to meet from home? Secure online sessions are available to clients anywhere in Maryland, with the same care and the same confidentiality as meeting in person.

Evening appointments are available Monday through Thursday, because getting help should not require rearranging your whole life.

Common Questions

OCD therapy, answered.

Do my intrusive thoughts mean something is wrong with me?

No. Nearly everyone has intrusive thoughts; OCD makes them louder and stickier. Thoughts are not intentions, and the distress you feel about them is actually evidence they run against your values, not with them.

I do not wash my hands or check locks. Could it still be OCD?

Yes. Many compulsions are mental: reviewing, neutralizing, silently reassuring yourself. OCD is defined by the loop, not by any one ritual.

Do you offer online therapy?

Yes. In addition to in-person sessions at the Towson office, I offer secure video sessions for clients located anywhere in Maryland. Many people mix the two, coming into the office when they can and meeting online when life gets busy.

Do you offer evening appointments?

Yes. Evening sessions are available Monday through Thursday until 8:00 pm.

The loop can loosen.
