Panic Attack & Panic Disorder Therapy in Towson, Maryland

A racing heart. A chest that will not let air in. The certainty, in that moment, that something is terribly wrong. And afterward, the quieter fear that never fully leaves: when is the next one coming? Panic is treatable, and you do not have to manage it alone.

When your body sounds a false alarm

A panic attack is your body's alarm system firing at full strength with no real danger in the room. Pounding heart, shortness of breath, dizziness, a feeling of unreality, the conviction that you are having a heart attack or losing your mind. Many people end up in the emergency room the first time, and being told "it was just panic" does not make it feel any less real.

Then something quieter takes over: the fear of fear itself. You start scanning your body for the first sign. You avoid the highway, the grocery store, the crowded room where it happened. Your world gets smaller, one precaution at a time. That shrinking is what panic disorder really costs you, and it is exactly what therapy can reverse.

How therapy for panic helps

In our sessions at my Towson office, we will work together to:

  • Understand what a panic attack actually is and is not, because knowledge alone takes away some of its power
  • Learn in-the-moment tools to ride out a wave of panic instead of being swept away by it
  • Unwind the fear of the next attack, which is the engine that keeps panic going
  • Take back the places and situations you have been avoiding, gradually and at your pace
  • Look at what is underneath, because panic often shows up when life has been asking too much for too long

If you have not already, it is worth seeing your doctor to rule out medical causes for your symptoms. Once you have, therapy is one of the most effective paths through panic there is.

What working with me is like

I am Matthew Richardson, and my practice is built on one idea: no two people experience panic the same way, so no two treatment plans should look alike. Sessions are unhurried and confidential, in a comfortable office on Allegheny Avenue in the heart of Towson, a short drive from anywhere in Baltimore County. Prefer to meet from home? Secure online sessions are available to clients anywhere in Maryland, with the same care and the same confidentiality as meeting in person.

And because panic does not wait for a convenient hour, evening appointments are available Monday through Thursday.

Common Questions

Panic attack therapy, answered.

Are panic attacks dangerous?

They are intensely frightening, but a panic attack itself is not dangerous. That said, it is always wise to see your doctor to rule out medical causes, especially after a first episode.

Why do my attacks come out of nowhere?

They can feel random, but there is usually a pattern: accumulated stress, subtle body sensations, or situations your mind has flagged. Part of our work is making the invisible triggers visible, because a fear you can see is far easier to change.

Do you offer online therapy?

Yes. In addition to in-person sessions at the Towson office, I offer secure video sessions for clients located anywhere in Maryland. Many people mix the two, coming into the office when they can and meeting online when life gets busy.

Do you offer evening appointments?

Yes. Evening sessions are available Monday through Thursday until 8:00 pm.

The fear of the next one can end.
